Here’s what we’re up to.

Let’s talk Color: A simple guide to color spaces

Color

Here’s a hypothetical for you: You’ve been working with us on a logo for your business. We’ve gone through the design process and arrived at a beautiful & thoughtful mark that reflects your unique characteristics. Awesome! What happens next?

We’ll prepare your logo in a variety of color spaces: RGB, CMYK, and Pantone. These color spaces are used in different contexts, and choosing the right file type for your needs depends on a few factors. It may seem confusing at first, but with some basic information, you’ll know everything you need to get by. Let’s break it down:

Color_RGB

RGB

All RGB colors are made by mixing varying amounts of red, green, and blue light. You should use RGB files in any digital or screen-based context. This includes websites, email blasts, digital banner ads, and tv spots.

Color_CMYK

CMYK

All CMYK colors are made from varying amounts of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink. You should use CMYK files in any physical or print-based context. This includes business cards, letterheads, and brochures to name a few. CMYK is often referred to as four-color printing and is the most common (and usually the most economical) method of producing physical pieces.

Color_Pantone

Pantone

All Pantone colors are made from a combination of base pigments mixed in specified amounts. You should use Pantone files in any physical or print-based context where color accuracy is imperative. Pantone is often referred to as spot color printing, and its main benefit is consistency and predictability — a Pantone color will always look the same, regardless of vendor and production technique. Pantone Coated colors are used for glossy surfaces, and Pantone Uncoated colors are used for matte surfaces.

Bam! Now you’re a color space expert! Well, maybe expert is a stretch, but you should know pretty much everything you need to in order to use your logo effectively. However, if you ever feel like you’re out of your depth when it comes to color, don’t hesitate to contact us here at RBA.

Six things you may not know about Jennifer, our Vice President/Business Development Manager and Strategic Planner.

1. Born and raised in Texas (actually a stone’s throw from where the Cowboys played). But most of my time was in Amarillo – 16 hours from the Gulf of Mexico and even farther from the oceans. I experienced my first bite of crab cake in VA, and now I’m totally hooked on any well prepared crab dish.. I rarely eat the Texas beef I was raised on.

2. By coincidence, I lived in Randall County for more than 13 years and graduated from Randall High School – so maybe Jesse’s family has some relatives who relocated to Texas 200+ years ago?

3. I met my husband at the 1999 Strawberry Hill horse races . Many in RVA can boast that they attended Strawberry Hill and never saw a horse race. I did see a few horses race, but people watching was the best spectator sport at track.

4. I danced for the Lone Star Ballet, a regional dance company.  Because I was my full height of 5’11” at 14, I typically danced with the university dancers vs. students my age. This drove my desire to try and be as good as the adult dancers. Our director, the late Neil Hess, inspired all of his dancers to appreciate the beauty, elegance and importance of all fine arts that I carry to this day.

5. Yearbooks are what moved me to Virginia. While working as marketing director for the Texas Tech yearbook, I was recruited into sales/account mgt. and moved half way across the country. My first visit to VA was Oct. ’98 and I was astounded by the range of colors in the fall foliage. Driving down a winding road during my travels made me feel like I was in a car commercial with the leaves flying behind me. At that moment I knew Virginia was my new home. I’m a proud Texan by birth, but a Virginian by choice.

6. I am serving my penance to my former yearbook students, advisors and publishers. I’m a volunteer creating and editing my children’s elementary yearbook for the past 2 years. Our son and daughter enjoy looking at all of their yearbooks often and remembering small details unique to that year of school.

Six things you may not know about David, our Graphic Designer/Front End Developer.

1. I’ve been doing improv comedy since middle school and have performed at a number of festivals around the country. In 2009, I co-founded the Richmond Comedy Coalition and in 2013 I was selected as one of Richmond’s “Top 40 Under 40” after the opening of our own permanent space, the Coalition Theater.

2. If you think you see my face on TV from time to time, you’re not crazy (or maybe you are…who knows), but every once in awhile I book a TV commercial. My first gig had me as a meat patty running from humans for the Virginia Lottery.

3.  I was super into comic books as a kid. My crates of comics, binders of cards, and bins of action figures are stashed at my parents house, though I can’t take all the credit for my collection. Most of it was actually passed down to me from my older cousin.

4. I love traveling and finding the best local places to eat. If you go to a new city and settle for lunch at Panera because its quick and easy, we would not get along.

5. My favorite summer thus far was the one after my junior year of high school. I attended the theater program at the Governor’s School for Performing and Visual Arts at the University of Richmond. The summer before that I got an all-you can watch Blockbuster rental membership. One summer, 72 movies. Not too shabby.

6. I’ve never been stung by a bee and I intend to keep it that way.
